A few questions for discussion starters

  1. What did you hear that seemed important to you?

  2. What was new information?

  3. What did you disagree with?

  4. What are your questions?

You may choose from this next series of questions as a way to explore the presentation through discussion

  1. What is wrong with praying for what you want — using prayer only for requests?

  2. In 1 Samuel 1, when Hannah finished praying at the temple, her countenance was no longer sad. Was the good of her prayer dependent on the outcome? What does that tell us about prayer?

  3. Why did David cease to pray after his child died? What does it mean when he says, "I know now that I shall go to God. He shall not come to me?" Why did David pray so hard before the child died, but took up his duties again as ruler after the child died?

  4. Why did God not take away Paul's affliction? Was Paul content with God's answer to his request? Why?

  5. When Jesus, God's only son, prayed in Gethsemane, did he get what he asked for? What does that mean for us?

  6. Why does Dr. Sittler caution us against using prayer as a "holy gimmick?"

  7. Did Hannah, David, Paul, or Jesus get what they prayed for? Do our desires always match our needs? Do we trust God to know our needs?
